MD/MS/Diploma
The primary choice
after MBBS for candidates who wish to advance their medical career is post
graduation course in specialties like internal medicine, general surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, ENT etc. After MD/MS you
become a specialist doctor. The duration
of course is 3 years.
Diploma of National Board (DNB)
Some MBBS graduates also pursue their dreams
of becoming a specialist doctor by continuing with a Diploma in the specialist
field.
DNB is a
postgraduate diploma course offered by the National board of Examinations, and recognized by the MCI. The duration of course is 3 years.
Few glitches
that make DNB a second choice to MD/MS is the passing rate in DNB being very
low, depending on the course and hospital of choice. Secondly, many hospitals
prefer MD/MS candidates over DNB candidates. Thirdly, DNB course is provided
mostly in private hospitals where practical exposure is less than govt.

Clinical Research
When it comes
to the sphere of research, India has a lot of untapped opportunities. There is
an immense need and demand for clinical researchers.
Institutes
offering research opportunities are ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research),
CIMAP, CCMB(Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology), St. John's Research
institute.
M.Tech
MBBS graduates
can take their medical degree to another level by opting for M. Tech in
Nanotechnology and medical robotics, Biomedical Engineering and Biological Sciences, Medical Biotechnology, Nano medicine etc.
It is offered
in the IIT's for students who want to pursue their careers in, inventing
medical machines, developing machines and instruments for health care system.
Masters in Medical Science and Technology (MMST)
MMST is a 3
year post graduate program
that teaches engineering skills to medical professionals. MMST
graduates are capable of providing technical inputs to various Hospital,
Medical Industries and Research Institutes that are working on innovative
techniques in Medicine.
It is also
offered by the IIT's which deals with Bioinformatics, medical biotechnology,
healthcare imaging, Tissue engineering etc.
Masters in Public Health
Master of Public
Health is a 2-year program in healthcare. Organizations such as WHO, McKinsey
& Company, UN Children's Fund, PHFI, The Clinton Health Access
Initiative, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, etc. hire such postgraduates.
Areas of
employment for such postgraduates include hospitals, research centers,
educational institutions, research institutions, etc.
They are hired
for roles such as Director of Programs and Services, Health Communications
Specialist, Public Health Management Analyst, Research Scientist.
Publishing industry
One of the ways that doctors are updated about the world of
medical science and health care is through medical journals.
There are a number of organisations that are into medical
publishing. they prefer recruiting medicos for compilation and editing of
articles for publications due to the technicality of the medical world .
If one is interested in research and also
have a knack for writing they can even contribute to various journals,
magazines, websites and newspaper columns dedicated to the cause of
medical science either full-time basis or part-time basis.
Combined Medical Services (CMS)
MBBS graduates can also apply
for public service commission examinations (UPSC).
UPSC conducts
Combined Medical Services Examination every year for government
institutions like Railways, Municipal Corporations recruitment as Medical
Officers.
MBA
MBBS graduates
can also join the hospital and pharmaceutical companies’ workforce as an administration
and management officer.
The demand for
Doctor's with an MBA degree is increasing tremendously due to their experience
in the medical field.

offering MBA admit students based on merit list of CAT exam held every year.
Masters in Health Administration (MHA)
It is a 2 year post-graduate degree (M.D.) in Health Administration which helps medical students to acquire the skills required in managing big specialty hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, etc. This career is very rewarding and the payback is also great.
